Leaf Molds
yesterday i sculpted four leaves to use as models for making molds. this photo shows the first step in using liquid latex for mold making. there is just one coat here, but i will put on two or three more and then make a 'jacket' of plaster for each one, so that there is a firm base to push the clay into. i like using this latex because it is very flexible and can be peeled off the molded clay with no damage to the unbaked clay model.
it may take a little longer to make these molds, but i find them more useful than other types.

Iggy...am curious what you will do with the leaves. As you know I'm a big fan of leaves. How big are the molds? I hope the cheesecloth works for you because the latex alone requires a large thickness. Also, it will eventually deteriorate from the plasticizer in the polymer clay.

i expect by the time the latex disintegrates, i won't want to use it anymore anyway!
these leaves are about 1 to 1 1/4 inches at widest point. i am using them now to make wine glass identifier thingies... i will post a photo sunday.
i have used these molds with cement and have some that are 10 years old and still usable. there are actually 4 layers of latex the third one has the cheesecloth embedded.
